The digital advertising industry often talks about the future as if it arrives neatly, painlessly, and without consequence. It highlights messaging of faster automation, better targeting, smarter analytics, and more efficient media buying; but leaves to others any mention of the real impact on real people in real environments.
As someone who works in paid advertising–and as an Indigenous woman whose perspective is shaped by the understanding that land, water, and community are resources not to be consumed without accountability–I cannot look at AI as purely a productivity tool. In my case, and for a growing contingent of people globally, personal worldview collides with emerging technology; and as I see it, we’re all standing at the intersection of these advancements (for better or worse) and ethical obligations as citizens and/or technologists.
AI Advertising, Data Centers, and Impact
Every AI-generated headline, audience model, predictive bid adjustment, and automated report is connected to a physical infrastructure somewhere. AI does not actually live in a “cloud” as the phrase suggests. Instead, it lives in data centers. Increasingly massive data centers.
These data centers consume extraordinary amounts of water and electricity, reshape rural landscapes, add stress to power grids, and influence land use in communities that too often have very little say in the process. Because of this, recent reports have shown growing public concern over how AI-driven data center growth may raise electricity costs for residents; strain infrastructure; increase pressure on local ecosystems; and escalate tensions between communities, politicians, and brands.
For instance, and in the case of several Indigenous communities, this conversation is not theoretical. Water rights, environmental stewardship, and long-term ecological balance are not niche political topics; they are instead tied to cultural continuity, tribal sovereignty, and survival. When Indigenous communities in Arizona, Oklahoma, Georgia, North Carolina, and elsewhere push back against hyperscale AI infrastructure because of water consumption or land impact, they are often dismissed as being “anti-technology”–but many are instead asking a more responsible question: what does ethical technological growth actually look like?
Responsible Use of AI in Advertising
The difficult truth digital marketing agencies, brands, government leaders, and even consumers need to acknowledge is that AI is now embedded into nearly every major advertising platform.
Google Ads uses AI-driven bidding, targeting, search intent modeling, and creative asset recommendations. Meta relies heavily on machine learning for delivery optimization. Microsoft Advertising has integrated generative AI into search and campaign workflows. So, too, are SEO and analytics platforms becoming increasingly dependent on AI-assisted benchmarking, reporting, and interpretation.
Simply put, a digital advertising agency cannot realistically opt out of AI use entirely–but there is a major difference between using AI thoughtfully as an operational assistant and becoming an agency that floods the internet with low-quality “AI slop” designed to purely game algorithms at scale.

As it stands today, we are watching an explosion of LLM-generated content that adds no insight, no lived experience, and no meaningful value. Entire websites are now generated to manipulate search engine algorithms instead of genuinely helping human beings. Ad creatives are increasingly optimized for impression and click volume over authenticity and relevance. The environmental and community cost of generating enormous quantities of disposable, irrelevant, and ultimately unhelpful content is rarely discussed; but it should be.
If agencies want to use AI responsibly, restraint matters. Perhaps, not every task needs generative AI; not every deliverable should be automated; not every AI tool provides net value; and not every efficiency gain is worth the ecological or community tradeoff.
Responsible AI Use Requires Intentionality
Responsible AI in advertising is less about perfection and more about disciplined governance.
Agencies should be asking:
- Does this AI usage meaningfully improve outcomes?
- Does it reduce repetitive labor while preserving human strategy and creativity?
- Is it used to generate quality connections between consumers and brands, or simply to generate more noise just because it can?
The most sustainable use of AI in advertising is targeted use, not maximal use.
AI can absolutely help:
- Accelerate reporting workflows
- Identify trends in large datasets
- Improve accessibility
- Streamline campaign quality assurance
- Reduce manual spreadsheet work
- Support multilingual adaption
- Help smaller businesses and nonprofits compete
However, agencies should maintain human oversight for:
- Strategy
- Messaging
- Cultural nuance
- Brand voice
- Ethical review
- Editorial judgment
A fully automated agency may eventually become a deeply irresponsible one.
Choosing Platforms with Credible Sustainability Commitments
Since digital marketing agencies cannot fully avoid AI, the next responsibility is choosing vendors and platforms making measurable sustainability investments, while also remaining honest about their shortcomings. Ignoring the shortcomings does no favors, but some major technology companies have commitments that are stronger and more transparent than others.
For example, Google has made one of the industry’s most ambitious public commitments: operating on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030. Unlike traditional renewable matching programs that offset annual electricity use, Google implements programs that focus on matching energy consumption hourly and regionally. They are also transparent in sharing their progress towards their goal with detailed environmental reports that track their Carbon Free Energy Percentage (CFE%). According to their 2024 reporting, Google announced they reduced their data center energy emissions by 12% year-over-year, despite a 27% lift in electricity demand from growth of their business, product adoption, and AI.
Microsoft’s sustainability goals are ambitious as well, with plans to become carbon negative, zero waste, and water positive by 2030. The company has more recently announced efforts to reduce the water intensity of their data centers, replenish more water than they consume, and further invest in improving the communities in which they operate. They, too, provide a transparent report to the public that tracks their progress across these initiatives, and have their data validated by third-party Deloitte, who was determined by even yet another independent party to be unbiased in their ratings.
Amazon, on the other hand, has invested heavily in renewable energy and remains one of the largest corporate purchasers of renewable energy, but faces heavy criticism. While they provide public reports, often cited concerns involve transparency gaps, continued use of fossil fuels in some parts of the world, and whether the renewable energy procured by Amazon accurately reflects operational realities.
This distinction matters. A credible climate commitment is not the same thing as a perfect environmental record. In fact, being transparent with shortcomings is a clear sign of a company’s credibility with regard to its climate commitment. That transparency provides a basis from which to actively engage in improvements, as opposed to greenwashing, which engages in deception by portraying a company, product, or policy as being more environmentally friendly or sustainable than it actually is.
Greenwashing for organizations often sounds like “100% renewable powered,” “net-zero AI,” and “sustainable cloud computing;” but without regional energy disclosures, water-use transparency, independent audits, acknowledgment of continued fossil fuel dependence, or other evidence for their measurement and impact initiatives.
The advertising industry should become more skeptical of polished Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) language that avoids discussing tradeoffs. Why? Because the tradeoffs are real; and consumers–who are real people, incurring real costs, and living in real environments–increasingly care.
The AI Push Back and Why Agencies Should Pay Attention
Resistance to data centers is gaining global momentum. Residents are increasingly raising concerns over water consumption, rising utility costs, environmental degradation, and distrust with brand and government entities–all tied to AI infrastructure expansion.
Many Indigenous communities already understand what happens when industries promise economic opportunity while externalizing environmental costs. There is a long, well-documented history in which major industries claiming to be at the forefront of innovation extracted wealth from their regions, exploited communities, and caused irreparable harm all while touting the benefits of technological advancements to the world.
There are patterns associated with these actions:
- Extraction framed as innovation
- Communities excluded from decision-making
- Environmental burdens concentrated in vulnerable regions
- Corporations continuing to expand their footprints while displaying sustainability branding
Let’s face it: the AI boom risks repeating these interactions unless accountability becomes central to technology adoption strategies.
What Ethical AI Looks Like for Digital Ad Agencies
Though agencies cannot control the hyperscale infrastructure decisions of major companies, they can control procurement choices, internal policies, and client expectations. They can control decisions made about the tools and software used in their work; the policies and practices that govern their workplaces; and managing clients’ expectations about the AI-enabled work being done on their behalf.
This matters more than many realize.
An AI-responsible agency should:
- Prioritize platforms with measurable climate reporting
- Reduce unnecessary AI generation
- Avoid mass-producing low-value content
- Maintain human editorial oversight
- Disclose meaningful AI usage internally
- Evaluate vendors beyond marketing claims
It should also recognize sustainability as operational behavior, not only as brand identity.
If an agency publishes Earth Day graphics while generating thousands of AI-generated landing pages, ad creative, and/or content that is ultimately low-value, disposable, and/or designed solely to manipulate search rankings or ad systems (as opposed to providing real value to both brands and their consumers), clients and consumers alike will eventually recognize the contradiction.
What that means for the future of advertising, and our collective future as people on a planet with limited resources, is still yet to be determined. Easier to see is that true sustainability work is often quieter, and less performative.
It can look like:
- Extending content lifecycles instead of constantly replacing everything
- Creating fewer but better assets
- Optimizing websites for efficiency
- Reducing digital waste
- Challenging clients when volume becomes excessive and/or prioritized over quality
- Considering ecological impact alongside ROAS
It also means acknowledging the complexity of AI in advertising honestly.
- No major AI platform is currently impact-free.
- No cloud provider is perfectly sustainable.
- No agency using AI is completely disconnected from environmental cost.
However, there is still an ethical difference between thoughtful participation with accountability and reckless acceleration without limits.

A Note on Indigenous Perspectives, and Why They Matter Here
Indigenous cultures are often inappropriately perceived as being of a “pre-modern” era, surpassed by today’s rapid technological advances. As such, Indigenous worldviews are often excluded from global conversations about emerging or rapidly evolving innovations. It should be noted, however, that Indigenous peoples are not one-dimensional in being “anti-tech.” Instead, many were raised on principles similar to the popular Seven Generations Principle of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy–a long-term planning framework which states that decisions made today (particularly as it relates to actions on land, air, water, and within communities) should be sustainable, ethical, and beneficial for at least seven generations of descendants into the future.
Being raised with this and similar Indigenous philosophies means questioning the pace of progress for modern technological development and the consumption of natural resources it requires in order to function. It means asking:
- What are the long-term consequences?
- Who bears the burden?
- What relationships are being damaged?
- What obligations do we carry to future generations?
These questions are not anti-innovation. They are exactly the questions the AI industry should be asking right now.
If the future of digital advertising depends on systems that consume enormous natural resources while producing endless synthetic noise, then the industry has confused automation with progress.
AI may be unavoidable, but irresponsible AI is not.
